Favorites Feature Explained

Favourites live in local app data, which is why an uninstall erases them.

What a favourite is, technically

When you mark a channel as a favourite, the app does not copy the stream anywhere. It stores a reference: the channel's identifier from your playlist, its display name, and often its position in a list. On every launch the app reads that stored set and merges it with the channels it has loaded. If the underlying channel no longer exists in your playlist, the favourite can be left dangling or simply dropped.

It is also worth noting what a favourite is not. It is not a copy of the stream and it is not a guarantee that the channel will keep existing. If the channel leaves your playlist, the stored reference has nothing to point at, and the app must either hide it or drop it on the next refresh. The favourite is a shortcut into the current list, not a preserved item.

The key property of favourites in a sideloaded app is that they have no obvious way to leave the device. Apps distributed through a store often sync bookmarks to an account. A sideloaded APK has no mandatory account infrastructure, so unless the developer has built their own sync service, the favourites you create are written only to local storage.

Where favourites live on an Android device

Android gives every app a private data directory that no other app can read. Favourites are typically stored there, either as key-value preferences or inside a small database. Because the directory belongs to the app, the normal backup and restore mechanisms on many devices ignore it unless the app declares otherwise.

  • Shared preferences files, which store small sets of key-value pairs such as a favourites list.
  • An internal database, which is where a long list of channels would most naturally live.
  • Files in the app's internal storage, sometimes used to hold an imported playlist alongside the favourites that reference it.

One practical consequence is that favourite storage is invisible to you. On a normal device you cannot browse the private data directory without debugging tools, so there is no way to back favourites up from within Android's normal interface. That is why the playlist, which you do control, is the only honest backup target, and why the storage question is the heart of this guide.

Unable to verify

We found no public evidence that AK47 Sports synchronises favourites to an account. Until sync is demonstrated, favourites should be assumed to exist only on the device where you created them.

Why updates preserve favourites but uninstalls do not

Android treats a package update and a package removal very differently. Installing a newer APK over the existing one replaces the code but leaves the data directory untouched, which is why favourites, playlists and settings survive most updates. Uninstalling removes the package and its data directory together, and a fresh install starts with empty storage.

This asymmetry explains most reports of disappearing favourites. An update should not erase them. If favourites vanish, the far more likely cause is that the app was uninstalled first, or that app data was cleared, before the new build was installed. Reinstalling to fix an unrelated problem is the classic way people lose a favourites list without noticing.

The same model also explains why nothing carries over between devices. There is no server holding the favourites, and the data directory is wiped at removal, so a fresh install on another box starts from zero. Treating the app as device-bound, and the playlist as the portable artefact, is the accurate mental model.

What AK47 Sports reportedly offers

Developer claim

The developer advertises a favourites feature for marking frequently used channels. The exact storage behaviour behind it is not publicly documented, so we rely on the standard Android data model.

Reported by users

Users report losing their favourite lists after reinstalling the app, which is consistent with local-only storage and not evidence of an app fault.

Regardless of what the marketing material implies, the underlying Android data model is not optional: an app can only sync favourites across devices by adding its own account and server infrastructure, and nothing in the public documentation suggests AK47 Sports does so. The honest expectation is local-only storage with all the loss risks that implies.

Protecting your favourites

  1. 1.Keep a copy of your playlist

Save the M3U file you imported, or export it from wherever you got it. This is the source every favourite points back to.

  2. 2.Avoid uninstalling to fix problems

Try clearing the cache first, then clearing data only if you have exported the playlist. Uninstall is a last resort because it wipes everything.

  3. 3.Reimport after a reinstall

Install the new build, import your saved playlist, and rebuild favourites from it. This is the only reliable recovery path available.

If you rely on a large favourites list, get into the habit of exporting your playlist before any install you are not fully confident about. The minute of effort costs little, and it converts a permanent loss into a five-minute rebuild. For anything stored in a private app directory, there is no other safety net.

Worth knowing: Favourites are stored in the app's private data directory on the device, which is why an update preserves them but an uninstall removes them permanently.

Frequently asked questions

Will clearing the app cache delete my favourites?
No. Cache and persistent data are separate on Android, so clearing only the cache leaves stored favourites alone.
Do favourites sync across devices?
We could not verify any account-based sync in AK47 Sports. Without visible sync, favourites should be assumed to live only on the device where you created them.
Why did my favourites disappear after I updated?
Updating over the top should preserve app data. If favourites vanish after an update, the more likely cause is that the app was uninstalled first, or app data was cleared, before the new build was installed.
Can I back up my favourites?
Because favourites reference channels in your playlist, keeping a copy of that playlist is the safest backup. Reimporting it after a reinstall is the only reliable way to rebuild the list.
