The specs that actually matter

Hardware decode is easy to overlook because spec sheets rarely lead with it, yet it is the difference between a box that plays everything and a box that stutters on anything modern. A budget chipset that decodes only H.264 will handle most standard streams but may struggle with HEVC or AV1 sources, and that shows up as dropped frames rather than a clear error message.

  • SoC video decode support — whether the chip decodes H.264, H.265/HEVC, VP9 and AV1 in hardware. This decides which streams play at all.
  • RAM — enough to keep the app and the player buffer alive; more matters when multitasking or running a heavy launcher.
  • Storage — sideloaded apps and their data live in internal storage; small eMMC capacity can fill quickly with downloads.
  • Ethernet and Wi-Fi generation — wired beats wireless for stability, and older Wi-Fi drops out under congestion.
  • HDMI and HDCP handshakes — copy-protection handshakes between box and television cause many 'black screen' reports.

Codec support is the one spec that compounds over time. Sources migrate to newer codecs because they deliver the same picture at a lower bitrate, so a device that is adequate today becomes inadequate the season the sources switch — without any hardware change on your side.

Two quieter specs deserve attention too. The Wi-Fi antenna and radio quality vary far more between boxes than the same Wi-Fi standard number suggests, and a box that ships with a gigabit Ethernet port over a 100-megabit one removes the last question mark from the wired path. Neither appears in the headline marketing.

What is mostly marketing

Streaming is not a heavy workload. It is a network read, a hardware decode and a video output, all of which use a fraction of a modern chip's capacity. Specs aimed at gamers and power users mostly add price without adding playback.

  • Core counts and clock speeds — a streaming app rarely uses many cores; the decoder and the network stack matter more.
  • '4K ready' labels — they usually mean the box can output 4K, not that the source will be 4K or that the chip can decode high-bitrate 4K HDR.
  • Gaming-branded RAM and cooling — streaming draws little sustained load; these add price, not playback quality.
  • Claims that 'everything works' — no box can fix a source that is offline or a rights restriction.

The brand on the box matters even less than the brand inside it. The same reference chipset appears inside boxes sold under different names at different prices, and the software the vendor ships is often the only difference. Buying by chipset name beats buying by brand name.

What hardware cannot fix

Hardware sits in the middle of the pipeline, not at the start. If the stream source is overloaded, the network congested, or the app's own codec support limited, a faster box changes nothing. Device choice is one link in a chain that also includes the source and your connection, and upgrading the wrong link is the most common way money is wasted.
